Into The Grass
'Crabbing'
|
For some years I had wanted to studyand carve bonefish and while curly yellow birch is the ultimate medium, it is fiendishly difficult to carve. The opalescent bands of light and dark wood are in fact a reversal of grain. |

I should say too that this highly figured wood is nearly immpossible to photograph. The 'curl' in the wood flashes as the viewer moves, but a photograph only captures the static image. The background of these carvings photographs like it is undulating, but it is physically flat. |

Thus far 'Into the Grass' has taken 6 months - can't wait to see a buffed tung oil finish light it up. |
I often use subtle contours suggesting light and current in my carvings but when I found curly yellow birch all I could see was refracted light bouncing off sandy flats.
